Recent
evaluations have scrutinized Morocco's performance in nature protection. Morocco
ranks 136th out of 180 nations
in the 2024 Nature Conservation Index (NCI), indicating
its considerable challenges in preserving biodiversity.
Breakdown of Morocco's NCI Scores:
- Land
Management: Ranked
136th with a score of 51.84.
- Threats to
Biodiversity: Ranked
150th, scoring 55 points.
- Capacity
and Governance: Placed
129th with 58 points.
- Future
Trends: Ranked
135th, scoring 35 points.
These rankings highlight ecosystem vulnerabilities in Morocco that
are linked to economic expansion, human activity, and the effects of climate
change.
Morocco has responded by launching initiatives to improve
biodiversity conservation, such as enlarging protected areas, implementing
sustainable land management techniques, and balancing between environmental
preservation and economic growth through forestry, protected areas, and water
conservation.
Furthermore, the Halieutis Plan and the Green Morocco Plan seek to
promote ecologically sustainable fishing and farming methods.
Nonetheless, the NCI results indicate that more
aggressive and planned measures are required to solve persistent environmental
issues successfully.
